We love to write for lots of different reasons at Brookfield Infant School. We do English every day and our preparation for writing includes lots of Drama experiences, talk for writing, word gathering, grammar and spellings throughout a two week programme. The first week on a project gets us ready to re-tell stories, poems, instruction etc. After that we use our innovational and editing skills to change, modify and tweek our writing into something new and improved from our first attempts.
We have our own targets for our writing and we always look to better our own work realising that we all work and learn how to write at different times. Our teachers encourage us and we are expected to learn new spellings at home as well as learning new poetry every two weeks in order for us to have a store of words to use.
At Brookfield we follow the Letters & Sounds program to teach phonics but also use aspects of Jolly Phonics and Read, Write, Inc to support children. We teach phonics through a daily morning session (9.00-9.20). Children also learn new or tricky words during SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) sessions once a week. Different sounds may be practiced during guided reading activities through games and group work. Any children who may need a little extra help learning their sounds come along to our phonic catch-up sessions just before lunch where the class teacher works closely with a smaller group.
All teachers integrate phonic teaching throughout the day, highlighting new or familiar sounds as the class come across them. Each classroom has a sound chart displayed with different spelling rules (depending on the age group) to aid children in their daily learning.
Phonics are taught through teacher directed tasks, practical hands on games, ICT games/ learning and group work.
We don't follow a set scheme of work at Brookfield when teaching phonics, however we work from a mixture of letters and sounds, the new curriculum documentation for spelling and other useful phonic resources.
If you would like to know more about how we teach phonics or how to pronounce the different sounds please see your class teacher.
The youtube link below is also very useful
At Brookfield we use a font with lead outs to get children ready for joining.
If you would like to see examples of how we form letters and start to join up please speak to your class teacher. They will be happy to give you a copy of our examples.
In Year 1 and 2 we encourage neater handwriting by giving out handwriting certificates. These are given whenever an improvement is seen. Your child can collect a new certificate each time they improve their handwriting and make it neater!
In year 2 children can also work towards their Pen Licences. These are awarded when children have consistently neat, joined handwriting, spell and punctuate carefully and take care over the overall presentation of their work.
(Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)
There is a new focus on SPaG in the new curriculum. If you hear your child talking about this it means Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar! It includes some of the following things at a KS1 level:
SPaG is taught throughout all lessons and through verbal conversations. Year 1 and Year 2 have separate SPaG lessons to help them learn the new skills.
