Week 2 - 1st March

We have finished practising Year 2 Common Words. We will still be looking at these in class but would expect children to know them or identify them around the classroom. This week's spellings are suffixes -ful and -ed.

Monday

Phonics -  Today we will go through the spellings for this week (see above), talking about segmenting to spell and using drawings to help us remember tricky words. (We will be working through these on the Live Zoom).

Additional Activity: Have a go at practising your spellings at home.

English - This week is Book Week. We will be exploring the Story of Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson in a few different ways. We will be writing our own versions next week so it is very important the children join in this week so they know the main parts of the story ready for their return back to school next week smiley

Questions to discuss about the book:

What type of character are Cave Baby's parents? How do you know, what vocabulary is used?

Which period of time do you think the story is set? Why do you think CB's parents had to do those jobs? Do we have to hunt for our food nowadays?

Why do you think Cave Baby's parents are always so busy? What are they doing?

Where did you think the mammoth was going to take Cave Baby? Do you think CB was worried?  How do you know?

Can you think of 3 other verbs (synonyms) that the hyena, hare and tiger might have been doing? Cackling, leaping, strolling....

Why do you think the mammoth took him to the cave? Do you think the mammoth's family appreciated what Cave Baby had done? How do you know they did/didn't?

At the end of the story, what is Cave Baby dreaming about and why?

Predict: Do you think Cave Baby will tell his parents what happened? Do you think it was real or a dream?

Task 1: Re-tell the story using drama/in your own words (it doesn't have to rhyme) and recording on a phone or tablet, post it on your child's portfolio. Maybe you can find some props around the house (paint, a wooly mammoth or fluffy toy or even dress like the cave baby) to help you tell the story using the "Cave Baby Powerpoint". Parents can get involved too!

Task 2: Ordering the Story. Using the pictures provided or draw your own pictures. Can you put the story in order and re-tell it in your own words?

Task 3: Sentence Improving. "Cave Baby Powerpoint" - there are sentences at the end of the Powerpoint that need up-levelling. Can children add adjectives, better verbs or adverbs in to make the boring story sound better?

Topic -  Art - Cave Painting

1.30PM - PPT (We will go through this on Zoom) - look at a variety of cave paintings, discuss what they look like and what they are of.  What colours are used? Look at where the paints would of come from in those time.

Think about what cave paintings are of, why were they used? Ask the children to come up with reasons as nobody knows for sure - why might this be? Because it was so long ago and people only have the paintings as an answer. Possible reasons that some people think - religion, other symbols, stories, messages.

Task - children need to create their own cave paintings (using any tools they want such, chalk, pencil, paint - showing something important to them about school - a symbol, a message, a story from their time at school.  Remember, just key objects not like a storyboard. Try to stick to traditional colours.

Phonics - Compound Words

We will be going through this on the Zoom.

daybreak, daytime, daydream, daylight, everyday, birthday, someday, weekday.

Task 1 – Children pick a word and try to come up with compound words containing their chosen word – man, woman, time, thing, sun, some, sand, play, out, one, no, head, hand, green, eye, every, body, any

Task 2 – Look at compound words on sheet, choose 5 to practise and learn.

Wednesday

Phonics  - Meanings of compound words.

We will go through this on Zoom. Explain that we can usually workout the meaning of a compound word by looking at what each part of the word means – look at some examples. Explain that some aren’t as clear as they have words that have an old-fashioned origin.

Task – look at the words, make up a new compound word and write a definition for it. For example sea and paper could make sea paper, a special new type of paper made from seaweed.

English - Writing.

Today we will be thinking about writing our Cave Baby story using our best handwriting and S picture plan from Tuesday. The class teacher will model some of their plan but also choose random sentences from the children's plans who are on Zoom (if they have changed the story/adjectives/verbs etc).

Task 1: Before Zoom - please rehearse and practise acting out your picture plan. We will be hearing a few of these on Zoom just in case anyone got stuck for ideas yesterday.

Task 2: Children to write their story. Stopping to check whether they have used their plans. Children must include adjectives and verbs.

Task 3: Children could create their own book/booklet so they can then be a real author and illustrate each "chunk" of writing e.g. Once upon a time......illustration. One misty, foggy day......illustration. Children will have a few different paragraphs so could illustrate each part of it using 'Cave Style' drawings or markings smiley

Topic - Healthy Eating

We will go through this on Zoom -

What do we think cave baby and her family would eat?

Look through PPT.

Discuss different types of food - is the cave family's food the same or different to ours? How?

Look at plate divide and how much of each we should have.  Would early humans be the same? Should they have more fat etc as they are moving around more, doing more exercise?

Task - Children create a meal plate for us and one for cave baby's family. - On template or on own plate.
