    Our Mathematics Intent

Here at Brookfield Infant School we follow White Rose Maths. Through this, we intend to offer a Mathematics curriculum, which has been designed around our belief that all children, regardless of their starting point or background should have the opportunity to build life-skills and create memories which will support them to flourish throughout their learning journey.

The curriculum is both assessible and challenging for all our learners and we strive to provide this by creating a variety of practical and hands-on learning experiences which we believe can support even the most disadvantaged of pupils to learn to observe, explore and apply their Maths skills and knowledge in fun, engaging contexts.

It is our intention that all children will become increasingly independent in making rich connections and links between the different areas of mathematics helping them to become fluent in the basic fundamentals, reason and justify using high quality language skills and to persevere when solving intriguing problems.

    Our Mathematics Implementation

Maths is taught every day at Brookfield. Children receive one formal lesson each day as well as Maths skills being woven in throughout the day in songs, rhymes and cross curricular activities.

We aim to use a variety of practical, visual, auditory and written methods of teaching, whilst also encouraging children to explore and problem solve Maths for themselves.

We develop the children’s reasoning skills by providing them with opportunities to apply and ‘master’ the skills they have learnt in a variety of real life problems, deepening their understanding as well as encouraging them to explain ‘how they know’.

To help aid our children’s Mental Maths they work their way through a series of Maths Challenges. These are short 5 minute timed challenges that children begin in Year 1. They work through Number Bond, Times Table and finally Mental Maths challenges, proudly displaying their achievements on our Reward Board!

    Knowledge Organisers

Our Maths Knowledge Organisers are a summary of the key knowledge and skills that children will be taught within each area of Maths. Click on your child's year group to find out they will be focusing on each term throughout the year.

    Our Calculation Framework

Alongside mental maths, children are also introduced to written methods for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. They are introduced slowly and over time and the children always have access to practical resources which we encourage them to use alongside their formal written methods.
