Young Carers

   Young Carers at Our School

At Brookfield Infant & Junior School, we are passionate about supporting our Young Carers and celebrating the incredible role that they play at home. Many children help to look after a family member without even realising that what they are doing makes them a Young Carer. Getting the right support can make a huge difference to their wellbeing, confidence, and school life—and we are here to help.

What Is a Young Carer?

A Young Carer is a child or young person who helps to care for a family member who may have:

  • A physical disability
  • A long‑term or serious illness
  • A mental health condition
  • A learning disability
  • An addiction or substance‑misuse issue

Their caring role might involve practical tasks, emotional support, household responsibilities, or looking after siblings. Every situation is different, and all experiences are valid.

Why Support Matters

Young Carers often show maturity, empathy, and resilience beyond their years—but caring can also be tiring, stressful, or isolating. By identifying Young Carers early, we can:

  • Offer emotional support in school
  • Provide a safe space and understanding adults to talk to
  • Help them balance schoolwork with responsibilities at home
  • Connect families with specialist services
  • Give children opportunities to have fun, make friends, and just be children

There is no judgement. We simply want to ensure that every Young Carer at our school has access to the support, opportunities, and joy that they deserve.

Support Through Imago and Crossroads

When making referrals, our school works closely with Imago and Crossroads, two trusted organisations that provide fantastic Young Carers services. They offer:

  • Fun‑filled days out and activities
  • Holiday experiences and trips
  • Access to youth clubs for eligible children
  • Advice and ongoing support for families

These organisations are experienced, friendly, and committed to ensuring Young Carers receive the recognition and help they need.

Our School’s Monthly Young Carers Club

We also run a monthly lunchtime Young Carers Club, which children love attending!
It’s a relaxed, friendly space where:

  • Children choose the activities
  • We plan and deliver the session around their ideas
  • They can unwind, chat, play, and connect with others who understand their experiences

It’s always child‑led, supportive, and full of fun.
