Art and DT

Our Art & DT lead is Mrs Etheridge. If you have any questions about Art & DT, please contact her via the school office.

Art

We love getting messy at Brookfield! Art lessons are taught throughout lots of different subjects; and are usually based around the topics we are learning about. This is to give the children hands on, purposeful experiences; for example, weaving prayer mats in RE or drawing the different minibeasts that we have found outside. We also have lots of creative events throughout the year such as; art week, art galleries, art competitions etc.

We aim to use the children’s artwork to make our school (classrooms and hallways) as inspiring and engaging as possible. Each term we work together as a school to create a large hall display; every child in the school has an input in this!

Design and Technology (DT)

At Brookfield Infant School DT is taught through specific DT lessons, whole school projects, cooking and also through our S.T.E.M programme.

DT gives children the opportunity to investigate the world around them and explore using different media and materials. This gives them the knowledge and skills to design and create using structures, mechanisms and different materials, including food. It encourages children to be creative and think about important issues in our world.

How do we teach Art and DT at Brookfield?

At Brookfield Art and DT is taught in a range of ways and KS1 and EYFS look very different. (For more information please see the knowledge organisers at the bottom of the page)

In KS1 there is a focus on teaching the children different skills.

In Art the skills taught are:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • 3D Work
  • Collage
  • Printing
  • Photography
  • Textiles

In DT the skills are:

  • Designing
  • Making
  • Technical Knowledge
  • Cooking and Nutrition

The children learn these skills through specific Art/DT lessons, lessons in other subject areas, forest school, creative weeks, special events or competitions! Creative activities take part inside and outside as this allows us to experience a range of environments and conditions.

In EYFS the children explore media and materials and use their imaginative skills to create different artistic masterpieces. Inside the children have access to a creative area where they can paint, collage, print, make models using a range of resources. We also take our creativity outside; this might include chalking the pavement, weaving natural materials or using water to practice our tool control painting sheds fences and other paintable objects!

See our gallery below to get an idea of what Art and DT looks like at Brookfield!
