What is Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

What is Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

At The Flourish Federation, we recognise that every child is unique and that some children may require additional support to help them access learning and reach their full potential.

A child has Special Educational Needs (SEN) if they require extra support that is different from, or additional, to what is typically provided for children of the same age. This can be due to a range of learning differences or challenges that affect how they engage with school life.

You may hear the term SEN used alongside SEND - they are often used interchangeably, though they do have slightly different meanings.

The term SEN (Special Educational Needs) refers to children who require extra educational support, while SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) includes children who also have a diagnosed disability that may affect their ability to access learning.

The SEND Code of Practice (2015) defines four broad areas of need:

  • Communication & Interaction
  • Cognition & Learning
  • Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Sensory & Physical Needs
