Maths at Brookfield Junior School

At the Brookfield Junior School, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. We aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who are able to reason, solve problems and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Our mathematics curriculum is based on the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) Mastering Number and Curriculum Prioritisation materials. Through carefully sequenced learning, children build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to make connections and develop fluency alongside problem-solving and reasoning skills.

What does Maths look like?

Our lessons encourage children to think, discuss and explain their mathematical ideas. We use a range of representations and practical resources to help children develop a secure understanding before moving on to more abstract concepts. Children are encouraged to reason mathematically, justify their thinking and tackle challenges with confidence.

We have high expectations for all learners and believe that every child should have access to ambitious mathematical learning. Through adaptive teaching and timely support, we ensure children are supported to keep up with their learning journey rather than catch up later. Additional support is carefully planned to address misconceptions and build confidence, enabling children to continue learning alongside their peers.

Across the school, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through engaging lessons, mathematical discussion and opportunities to apply their learning. We want our pupils to leave the Juniors as confident mathematicians who are ready for the next stage of their education and able to use mathematics successfully in everyday life.
